Our newly refurbished bar and kitchen is at your disposal for your catering needs.
The Assembly Rooms are housed in a Grade II listed Victorian school, which for over 30 years was run by the Parish Council for the benefit of the people of Melbourne and the surrounding villages. In 2012 a group of five directors put forward a proposal to take over running of the Bill Shone Leisure Centre from the parish council, with the aim of running it as a community based not-for-profit company, allowing more people to get involved, making it responsive to local needs and bidding for external grants not available to public bodies.
Since then the centre has seen substantial changes. As well as improvements to interior decor and layout, the stage has been replaced with a modern portable facility, the assembly hall has had acoustic treatment, the storage area has been made more accessible to users, WIFI and hearing loops have been installed and the heating system has been replaced in most of the building. In addition the centre has seen significant growth and expansion in its use.
The kitchen and main lobby entrance are undergoing a £100K project to refit the kitchen and enhance the main entrance area making it much more welcoming and more modern for catering and bar activities.
We are an established not-for-profit business which is run entirely by volunteers, with one paid member of staff. The Board are drawn from all walks of our village community, and are also members of the Community Centre. Governance is conducted through regular monthly meetings and an annual general meeting, when accounts are prepared. Minutes of meetings are circulated to members of the organisation.
